About the pronunciation of 南瓜

Its pronunciation has nothing to do with the two Kanji, because the Japanese people borrowed this Kanji term from Chinese without also borrowing the Chinese pronunciation at the same time. We don't know the reason but they adopted the pronunciation of the Portuguese term Cambodia abóbora. As a result, this Kanji term has a European pronunciation, a strange but not uncommon phenomenon in Japanese.
