How to remember?

The radical 月, though looks exactly the same as the Kanji for "moon", means "meat". So the design of this Kanji is that pigs are regarded as more a food source than an animal.

The remaining part 豕 was originally the Kanji for "pig" in ancient Chinese. But it is rarely used as an individual Kanji nowadays, neither in Japanese nor in Chinese. 豕 looks like a pig in vertical position as illustrated, especially the flat nose.

Radical

The radical of this Kanji is 月(にくづき).

Do not confuse this Kanji with:

-which means "peck"

If you are also learning Chinese...

Be careful that this Kanji is rarely used in Chinese, except for writing the menu of a Japanese restaurant. The Kanji (Hanzi) for pig in Chinese is . Japanese also has a similar character (いのしし), but it means "boar".
