How to remember?

Imagine that the three vertical strokes are three peaks.

Radical

itself is a radical, meaning that it is a component of other Kanji.

Do not confuse this Kanji with:

 which means "go out"

which means "up"

山 is very common in Japanese family names

山 (yama) is very common in Japanese family names which usually consist of two Kanji. Examples are 山本(やまもと, Yamamoto), 山田(やまだ, Yamada), 山口(やまぐち, Yamaguchi), 山崎(やまさき/やまざき, Yamasaki or Yamazaki) and 山下(やました, Yamashita).
