How to remember?

This Kanji is similar to the one for "hand" (i.e. 手). We can take advantage of their similarity and imagine that 毛 is a hairy bent arm, as illustrated.

You can also imagine that 毛 looks like a feather.

And if you have already finished learning Hiragana and Katakana, you may have notice that Hiragana も and Katakana モ are very similar to 毛. Actually, they are derived from this Kanji and thus their pronunciation "mo" is similar to the Chinese style pronunciation of 毛 (mou).


This Kanji itself is a radical.

Do not confuse this Kanji with:
